Family: Hydrocharitaceae Scientific name: Lagarosiphon major Description: Plant Form: Perennial submerged aquatic herb. Size: Reaches up to 7 m deep. Stem: Fixed or free-floating, brittle, narrow, sparsely branching. Leaves: Stiff, 5-20 mm long, alternately spiralling along branches, becoming tightly crowded near the ends. With minutely toothed edges and narrowing tips which curve back towards the stem. Flowers: Tiny 3-petaled transparent or white female flowers which float by thread-like stalks. Male flowers break off and float to the surface. Fruit and Seeds: Do not reproduce by fruit or seeds in Australia. Habitat: Ponds, lakes, dams, streams. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from similar aquatic weeds already present in Australia by having alternately spiralling leaves on stems rather than in circles or whorls.
