Family: Poaceae Scientific name: Jarava plumosa Description: Plant Form: Perennial grass. Size: Up to 80 cm tall. Stem: Upright or bending upwards. May branch at nodes. Mostly hairless. Leaves: Thin blades 2-18 cm long and often rolled inwards. Sheath rolls around stem. There is a membranous ligule where the leaf blade meets the sheath. Flowers: Oblong to linear, loosely clustered and many branched head 4-12 cm long. Consisting of numerous elongated small white spikelets. Fruit and Seeds: Individual spikelets 8-10 mm long with a straight to twisted awn with long hairs at base. Each contain a single 4 mm grain. Habitat: Pastures, grasslands, open woodlands. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from native Speargrasses (Austrostipa or Rytidosperma species) by having a membranous ligule where the leaf blade meets the stem.
