Family: Polygonaceae Scientific name: Polygonum aviculare Description: Plant Form Sprawling mat-forming herb. Size Up to 30 cm tall, mats up to 1 m diameter. Stem Long, stiff, wiry, hairless, branching. Upwards curving or prostrate. Leaves Oblong to lance-shaped 1-4 cm long. Much larger on main stems than branches. Flowers Solitary or in groups of 2-7, in the leaf joins. White or pinkish with a greenish base. With 5 petal-like tepals fused together at base. Fruit and Seeds Dry up to 2.5 mm long, reddish-black, dull, minutely granular. Habitat Cropping areas, pastures, grasslands, lawns, disturbed areas, urban bushland. Distinguishing Features Distinguished from Prostrate knotweed (Polygonum arenastrum) in having larger leaves which are larger on the main stems than on branches.
