Family: Asteraceae Scientific name: Lactuca saligna Description: Plant Form Annual or biennial erect herb. Size 30 cm to 1 m tall. Stem Smooth, whitish. Leaves Green, sometimes with spines on lower side of midrib, finely lobed, upper ones stem-clasping and with 'ears' near stem. Flowers Numerous small, dandelion-like, yellow flowerheads in a large grouping. Fruit and Seeds Seed body 3-4 m long, flattened, with ribbed sides. Have parachuting hairs at the end of a stalk. Habitat Gardens, roadsides, pastures, pavement, bare ground. Distinguishing Features Leaves finer than in Prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and generally extend more or less horizontally.
