Family: Ochnaceae Scientific name: Ochna serrulata Description: Plant Form: Evergreen shrub. Size: Up to 2 m tall. Stem: Green or bronze when young, becoming brown with age. Covered in tiny light-coloured dots (lenticels). Leaves: Light to dark green, shiny, sometimes with a bronze tint on new growth. Narrow oblong-shaped, 2-10 cm long and with fine toothed and often wavy edges. Flowers: Yellow with 5 petals, up to 3 cm across. Singular on short stalks between the leaf and branch. Petals drop off early revealing petal-like sepals which turn bright red with age. Fruit and Seeds: Clusters of small oval-shaped berries which mature from green to black. Olive-like. Containing a single seed. Habitat: Rainforests, riparian areas, pastures, woodlands, coastal scrub.
