Family: Oleaceae Scientific name: Ligustrum lucidum Description: Plant Form: Small tree. Size: Up to 12 m tall. Stem: Smooth and hairless. Greenish when young, becoming greyish with age. Leaves: Oval shaped with pointed tip, 4-24 cm long, hairless and leathery textured, with smooth edges. Oppositely arranged along stems. Glossy green and paler underneath. Often slightly folded inwards. Flowers: Small white or cream coloured, 2-5 mm long, with 4 petals fused at base forming a tube. In large branched clusters. Fruit and Seeds: Round or oval-shaped, 5-10 mm wide, berry-like with a hard centre. Becoming bluish or black as they ripen. Containing 2 ribbed seeds. Habitat: Rainforests, open woodlands, urban bushland, waste areas, pastures, riparian areas, old gardens. Distinguishing Features: Differs from other Privets (Ligustrum species) in having larger, broader leaves.
