Family: Fabaceae Scientific name: Macroptilium atropurpureum Description: Plant Form: Creeping or climbing perennial herb or vine. Size: Up to 3 m tall, sometimes climbing to 5 m high. Stem: Ribbed, hairy, becoming woody with age. Leaves: Dark green, divided into 3 leaflets 2-7 cm long, with 2 bottom leaflets slightly lobed. Slightly hairy on top and very hairy underneath. Flowers: Typical pea-like dark reddish or purple, in clusters of 6-12. Fruit and Seeds: Pods 5-10 cm long, covered in hairs. Ripening from green to brown. Containing brown or black oval or kidneys-shaped seeds which are ejected explosively. Habitat: Roadsides, riparian areas, disturbed areas, coastal scrub, forest edges. Distinguishing Features: Has deeper red flowers and more of a creeping or climbing habit than Phasey bean (Macroptilium lathyroides).
