Fruit and Seeds: Spikelets 7-9 mm long with long straight awns up to 1.5 cm long. Habitat: Disturbed areas, grasslands, pastures, roadsides. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from Brome fescue (Festuca bromoides) by having a much smaller (1.5 vs 2.5-5.5 mm) lower glume (bract surrounding spikelet) containing 3-6 (rather than 4-7) florets.
