Family: Fabaceae Scientific name: Desmanthus pernambucanus Description: Plant Form: Erect perennial herb or small shrub. Size: Up to 2 m tall. Stem: Smooth, hairless, angular, green, and with corky ridges. Leaves: Compound leaves with 13-19 pairs of opposite sided oval shaped leaflets which are often folded inwards. With a small yellowish-green gland below first leaflets. Flowers: Whitish or cream small pop-pom or wattle-like flowers in clusters. Fruit and Seeds: Pale green ripening to brown pods up to 6 cm long with 2 valves and containing 18-28 brown seeds. Habitat: Pastures, grasslands, rangelands. Distinguishing Features: Difficult to distinguish from other Desmanthus (Desmanthus species), and there are many hybrids and commercial varieties.
