Family: Caprifoliaceae Scientific name: Dipsacus fullonum Description: Plant Form: Biennial rosette herb. Size: Up to 2.5 m tall. Stem: Rigid, erect, emerging from centre of rosette. With numerous small hard prickles and lengthwise ridges. Leaves: Large rosette leaves 40-50 cm long which have small prickles along the midrib on the underside, and also finely toothed edges. Flowers: Distinctive oval shaped flower-heads 2-8 cm long at the end of stems. Densely packed with numerous purplish or occasionally whitish flowers. With stiff, narrow, spiny bracts which are upturned underneath. Fruit and Seeds: Dry, one-seeded 2-3 mm long. Habitat: Lakes, streams, neglected areas, pastures, roadsides.
