Family: Poaceae Scientific name: Holcus lanatus Description: Plant Form: Perennial tufted grass. Size: Up to 1 m tall. Stem: Round, green. Shaggy appearance due to covering of hairs. Leaves: Flat blades with smooth edges and pointed tips. Soft, covered in velvety hairs giving greyish appearance. Flowers: Dense elongated oval-shape and pinkish when young, opening up and becoming white with age. Fruit and Seeds: 4-5 mm long, boat-shaped and hairy. Lower glumes (seed husks) are mostly awnless while upper florets have short hooked awns. Habitat: Grasslands, open woodlands, riparian areas, swamps.
