Family: Poaceae Scientific name: Imperata cylindrica Description: Plant Form: Tufted perennial grass. Size: Up to 1.2 m tall. Stem: Short, erect, covered in hairs. With 2-5 nodes which are hairy or hairless. Leaves: Flat blades, up to 1.5 m long. Base hairy or hairless. Edges hairless or hairy. Flowers: Dense spike 5-20 cm long which is silvery, silky white. Spikelets in pairs with different stalk lengths. Fruit and Seeds: Glumes (seed husks) are translucent with long hairs on back. With chaffy covering on top which tears open. Habitat: This native grass inhabits a wide range of habitats, especially disturbed areas, and is a major weed overseas. Impacts: Note - this is a native plant.
