Family: Fabaceae Scientific name: Macroptilium lathyroides Description: Plant Form: Upright perennial herb. Size: Up to 1 m tall. Stem: Sometimes woody and sometimes may be slightly twining and climbing if near taller vegetation. Covered in short hairs. Leaves: Compound of 3 egg or oval-shaped leaflets 1-5 cm long. Hairless above, slightly hairy underneath, and with smooth edges. Flowers: Typical pea-shaped flowers, bright to dull red. On end of stalks up to 50 cm long. Fruit and Seeds: Elongated narrow pods 8-10 cm long, ripening from green to brown and becoming twisted. Contain mottled brown or black seeds. Habitat: Waste areas, roadsides, old gardens, cropping areas, urban bushland. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from Siratro (Macroptilium atropurpureum) by brighter red flowers, upright growth habit, and unlobed leaves.
