Family: Brassicaceae Scientific name: Matthiola incana Description: Plant Form: Perennial herb. Size: Up to 80 cm tall. Stem: Stout, covered in hairs, becomes woody at base. Leaves: Lance-shaped to linear, mostly with smooth edges, covered in hairs. Flowers: Clusters of showy white, pink, or purple flowers. Up to 3 cm across. Fruit and Seeds: Long narrow capsules that open to release oval-shaped winged seeds about 3 mm across. Habitat: Old gardens, coastal scrub, dunes. Distinguishing Features: May be confused with Night-scented stock (Matthiola longipetala) but has flowers which open during the day rather than at night, and also unlobed leaves.
