Family: Poaceae Scientific name: Phragmites australis Description: Plant Form: Tall perennial semi-aquatic grass. Size: Up to 6 m tall. Stem: Thick, fleshy, leafy, erect but often also running along ground. Leaves: Smooth, flat blades which are loosely in-rolled, up to 80 cm long and 4 cm wide. Flowers: Large, oval-shaped dense clusters 10-40 cm long, which have a tuft of silky hairs. Fruit and Seeds: Spikelets with 4-8 florets and with hairs over 1 cm long. Habitat: This native plant has a wide global distribution but is weedy outside its native range. It inhabits wetlands, riparian areas, ponds, and disturbed areas.
