Family: Salicaceae Scientific name: Populus alba Description: Plant Form: Large deciduous tree. Size: Up to 20 m tall. Stem: Spreading or erect, white-grey to pale grey rough to smooth barked, becoming deeply furrowed with age. With horizontal diamond shaped fissures clustered randomly. Leaves: Dark green smooth and hairless above, densely hairy (woolly) underneath giving white or greyish appearance. Have 3-5 deep lobes giving shape like a maple leaf. Flowers: In drooping purplish clusters off the stems before the leaves emerge. Fruit and Seeds: Capsule up to 3 mm long with 2 valves. Containing numerous cotton-like seeds. Habitat: Riparian areas, parks, gardens, wetlands, roadsides. Distinguishing Features: Woolly white or greyish leaf undersides distinguish from other Poplars (Populus species), except for perhaps Grey poplar (Populus x canescens) which has less deeply lobed leaves.
