Family: Polygonaceae Scientific name: Rumex acetosella Description: Plant Form: Upright perennial herb. Size: Up to 50 cm tall. Stem: The only above ground stems are flower stalks, which are slender, green, hairless and have lengthwise grooves. Leaves: Arrowhead-shaped with 2 lobes at base. Rarely they are narrow and oblong. Often on a stalk longer than blade. Flowers: Clumpy compacted but loosely arranged clusters of tiny green or reddish rust-coloured flowers. Fruit and Seeds: Tiny 3-seeded nut up to 1.5 mm long hidden in flower parts. Smooth and shiny, maturing to brown. Habitat: Woodlands, open forests, grasslands, riparian areas, disturbed areas, parks, mountains. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from Garden sorrel (Rumex acetosa) by being about half the size, and by lacking a distinctive joint halfway up the flower stems.
