Family: Iridaceae Scientific name: Sparaxis tricolor Description: Plant Form: Bulb herb. Size: Up to 30 cm tall. Stem: Unbranched flowerstalk (scape) which becomes slightly curved higher up. Leaves: Linear to elongated oblong or lance-shaped. 8-20 cm long. With pointed end. Flowers: Tubular, showy orange to dark red with oblong to lance shaped lobes. With a dark blotch above the bright yellow tube. Fruit and Seeds: Not seen. Has a few bulbils in the lowermost leaf joins. Habitat: Roadsides, disturbed land, old gardens, urban bushland. Distinguishing Features: Brightly coloured flowers distinguish from another species known as Harlequin flower (Sparaxis bulbifera) which has white flowers.
