Family: Bignoniaceae Scientific name: Spathodea campanulata Description: Plant Form: Evergreen tree. Size: Up to 25 m tall. Stem: Thick, marked with whitish corky spots. Young branches hairless or slightly hairy. Leaves: Large, up to 50 cm long, compound of 7-17 egg or oval-shaped leaflets, arranged oppositely along stems. Usually with a thin covering of soft hairs. With hairy brownish stalks. Flowers: Large, very showy, bright reddish-orange. With a horn-shaped brownish, hairy structure and 2 bright large 10-12 cm long fused petals above. In large dense clusters. Fruit and Seeds: Large, elongated and slightly flattened pod-like capsules 17-30 cm long. Ripen from green to brown, splitting open to release about 500 papery, almost transparent seeds. Habitat: Roadsides, agricultural land, riparian areas, waste areas, urban bushland, rainforest edges, old gardens.
