Family: Tropaeolaceae Scientific name: Tropaeolum majus Description: Plant Form: Annual or biennial herb. Size: Up to 2 m long. Stem: Creeping or sprawling. Fleshy, pale green, hairless. Can reproduce from segments. Leaves: Large, rounded, 4-15 cm across, with smooth or slightly lobed edges. Attached to stalks in the middle of the underside. Hairless, with prominent veins radiating from centre. Flowers: Very showy, 2.5-7 cm across, bright yellow, orange or red with 5 fused petals forming a trumpet-like shape. Sometimes with markings near the centre. Fruit and Seeds: Fleshy, pale green, up to 1 cm long, with 3 single seeded, ribbed compartments which do not open at maturity. Habitat: Riparian areas, urban bushland, roadsides, disturbed areas, old gardens. Distinguishing Features: Very distinctive however there are garden cultivars which have a variety of flower colours.
