Family: Solanaceae Scientific name: Physalis angulata Description: Plant Form: Erect annual shrub. Size: Up to 90 cm tall. Stem: Angled, hollow, mostly hairless but may have sparse hairs. Leaves: Oval-shaped with wedge-shaped base and pointed or tapering end. With toothed edges or 2 or more angular lobes. Flowers: 5 angled, pale yellow with brownish blotches. Fruit and Seeds: Orange coloured round berry enclosed in a balloon-like pentagonal (in cross section) calyx (leaf-like sepals fused together). Containing disc-shaped seeds. Habitat: Urban areas, waste areas, cropping areas, roadsides. Distinguishing Features: Distinguished from Cape gooseberry (Physalis peruviana) by being less hairy overall and having blotches rather than distinct spots on the flowers.
