Family: Fabaceae Scientific name: Medicago polymorpha Description: Plant Form: Creeping or spreading annual herb. Size: Up to 10 cm tall. Stem: Slender, green, hairless, running along ground, sometimes twining, sometimes more upright. Leaves: Clover-like triangular compound of 3 egg or oval-shaped leaflets. Almost hairless and with slightly toothed edges. Often folded inward like wedge. Flowers: Small, yellow, typical pea flowers 3-6 mm across. In clusters of 2-10. Fruit and Seeds: Coiled disc-like or cylindrical pod 4-11 mm across and usually covered with slender hooked spines which soften with maturity. Habitat: Grasslands, lawns, woodlands, shrublands, pastures. Distinguishing Features: Can be difficult to distinguish from other Medics (Medicago species) or Clovers (Trifolium species), but tends to have more flowers in clusters, less hairy stems.
