Family: Polygonaceae Scientific name: Persicaria decipiens Description: Plant Form: Erect to spreading perennial herb. Size: Up to 30 cm tall. Stem: Spreading or upwards curving. Leaves: Narrowly oval-shaped to lance-shaped, 5-12 cm long. Often with a dark purplish blotch near the middle of the upper surface. Flowers: Cylindrical slender, white and pinkish or purplish spike 2-6 cm long. Often drooping. Fruit and Seeds: Dark brown or black lens-like or triangular single-seeded dry fruit up to 2 mm across. Habitat: This native plant inhabits riparian areas, marshes, wetlands, lakes and drainage lines. Distinguishing Features: Flower cluster is more slender and typically more pinkish than similar native or exotic Knotweeds or smartweeds (Persicaria species).
