Family: Verbenaceae Scientific name: Duranta erecta Description: Plant Form: Sprawling evergreen shrub or small tree. Size: Up to 7 m tall. Stem: Green and hairy when young becoming light brown and rough with age. Often thorny in the leaf stalks when mature. Form clumps which are often drooping towards the ground. Leaves: Oppositely arranged pairs, sometimes in a group of 3. On short stalks and egg-shaped to oval shaped, 15-90 cm long. Sometimes with a few hairs and toothed edges. Either pointed or rounded tips. Flowers: Blue or pale purple tubular flowers 1-2 cm across, with 5 fused petals on short stalks on the drooping stems. Fruit and Seeds: Rounded berry-like in large clusters, ripening from green to orange or yellow. Habitat: Roadsides, old gardens, disturbed areas, woodlands, forests, riparian areas.
