Family: Aizoaceae Scientific name: Disphyma crassifolium Description: Plant Form: Prostrate succulent shrub. Size: Up to 30 cm tall and 1 m wide. Stem: Fleshy, spreading, smooth. Leaves: Fleshy, clustered along stems, smooth except for edges and underside. Green-tinged reddish or red. 2-3 cm long, banana-shaped. Flowers: Showy, purple with many petals around whitish centre, 2-5 cm diameter. Fruit and Seeds: Valves 5-12 mm long which are red and succulent when young, hardening and becoming dry with age. Containing almost smooth seeds about 1 mm across. Habitat: This native plant inhabits salty soils in coastal areas, dunes, rocky areas, arid areas, and bare ground. Distinguishing Features: Leaves are more angled than other Pigfaces (Carpobrotus species), which tend to be more confined to coastal areas.
