Family: Iridaceae Scientific name: Sparaxis bulbifera Description: Plant Form: Perennial bulb herb. Size: Up to 60 cm tall. Stem: The only above ground stem is a flowering stalk, which is short lived. Leaves: Elongated, soft, sword-shaped 10-30 cm long. Clustered at base of plant or along flowering stems. With smooth edges and pointed tips. Flowers: Bright white or cream, sometimes pale yellow or purple tinged, especially on undersides. With 6 petal-like tepals up to 4.5 cm long fused together at base to form tube. In groups of 1-6. Fruit and Seeds: Capsule up to 1 cm long which ripens from light green to brown. Contains several reddish-black seeds about 2 mm across. Habitat: Grasslands, pastures, open woodlands, heathlands, disturbed areas, riparian areas, roadsides. Distinguishing Features: Differs from Tritonia (Tritonia crocata) in having divided petal-like tepals rather than whole.
