Family: Cactaceae Scientific name: Harrisia martinii Description: Plant Form: Perennial spiny succulent sprawling plant. Size: Up to 2 m tall. Stem: Ropelike, spreading, spiny, bright green, fleshy, jointed at intervals. With weak lengthwise ridges. With spines 1-3.5 cm long. Flowers: White, turning pinkish with age, 15-18 cm across, merge downward into a greenish tube. Open at night and close in the morning before collapsing. Fruit and Seeds: Bright red when mature, rounded, 2-6 cm across with small rounded points with 3-5 spines. Contain a pulp with 400-1000 seeds. Habitat: Open woodlands, scrubland, pastures, forests. Distinguishing Features: Very similar to other Harrisia cacti (Harrisia species), but generally longer spines than Harrisia tortuosa and spines on the fruit unlike H. regelii.
